What is radiology?

Diagnostic radiology uses imaging techniques, such as x-rays, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound to look inside your body to assess or diagnose disease and injury. You’ll usually be referred to us for an imaging appointment following a referral from your GP or hospital Consultant.

The Society of Radiographers estimates that over 90% of patients have some form of imaging or scan during their time in hospital. Our Imaging Department team alone performs more than 18,000 scans a year.

At Benenden Hospital we can help you get the answers you need, quickly.

I have a question about diagnostic radiology

What happens before my diagnostic radiology procedure?

On arrival

You can usually eat and drink as normal and take any medications you’ve been prescribed on the day of your scan, unless we advise you not to.

When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be met by a Radiographer. They’ll talk you through the whole process, explaining what to expect from the scan and answering any questions you have.

During your scan

You’ll be asked to remove all jewellery. If you’re coming to see us for a neck, back or body scan it would help us if you could avoid wearing clothes with zips, clasps or hooks.

What should I expect during my private radiology treatment?

Your Radiographer will tell you a bit about the equipment they’ll be using and will help you to position the part of your body that’s being scanned. If you’re having a CT or MRI scan, they’ll give you a buzzer to hold which you can press any time if you feel uncomfortable or worried.

What happens after my radiology treatment?

Once your scan is complete, it’ll be sent to the Radiologist for reporting. This report will then be sent back to your referring Clinician - your GP or a Consultant here at the hospital. They’ll then decide the best course of action and will be in contact with you regarding the results. This can take up to three weeks, depending on the urgency of your scan.

How much does private radiology cost?
