You can access medical services delivered as part of your Benenden membership at Benenden Hospital.

First things first: before we can provide services under your Benenden membership, you must visit your GP who will determine what type of consultant you need to see or what type of diagnostic test or treatment is required.

As a Benenden member you must be on an NHS waiting list before being able to request services through your membership. Your GP should make a referral under the NHS for the consultation or treatment you require.

Once you have an NHS referral in place and there are delays to obtaining an appointment we may be able to help alleviate the distress any wait may cause. We can consider a request for assistance with the diagnosis and/or treatment required which can be delivered at Benenden Hospital.

N.B. Not all services are covered by your Benenden membership.

One possible alternative is that you may come to Benenden Hospital as an NHS e-Referral Service patient.

To access the service you need via the NHS e-Referral Service, you or your GP can make the first booking, either on-line at or by calling the NHS e-Referral Service line on 0345 608 8888.

If you are experiencing excessive waiting times within the NHS and this is causing you distress, get in touch with Benenden's Member Services Department on 0800 414 8100, to discuss your specific needs. They will do everything they can to help.

When you call member services, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Your Benenden Membership Number
  • Information about your condition and what type of consultation, treatment or test you need
  • The NHS wait time for any service you’re requesting and confirmation that you have been referred through the NHS. You will also be asked about the effect the wait is having on you

For diagnostic consultations, a copy of your NHS referral letter will be required by the Benenden Member Services Department, who will pass all the relevant information to us at Benenden Hospital.

If you already have a diagnosis and are requesting treatment for your condition, we’ll need your GP’s referral letter, together with a copy of the consultant’s report that advises the service you need.

Once the Benenden Member Services Department has authorised the required services under your Benenden membership, and the correct documentation has been received at Benenden Hospital, our Patient Appointments Team will get in touch with you to organise your first appointment. If, for any reason, you can’t make your appointment, please give us as much notice as possible so that we can give your slot to another patient.

Funding for any appointments must be authorised by Benenden before your appointment is arranged. Benenden Personal Healthcare offers treatment services on a discretionary basis. Please contact the Member Services Department on 0800 414 8100 before making any arrangements.
