Infection prevention & control

Whilst not all infections are preventable, a proportion of healthcare-associated infections are. With that in mind, infection prevention and control and basic hygiene are at the heart of good management and clinical practice.

We always seek to ensure that appropriate resources are allocated to provide effective protection of patients, staff and visitors health from hospital-acquired infection, communicable disease and antibiotic resistance.

Our high-tech and methodical approach to infection control means we offer a safe, clean environment with zero cases at Benenden of Bacteraemia or Septicaemia related to MRSA, and no cases of Clostridium Difficile (as defined by the Department of Health) - since 2002. That is because we’ve introduced thorough pre-admission screening, invested in high tech theatres, provided extensive training for our own cleaning teams, and appointed three Matron's to make sure that our strategy to ensure a clean, infection-free environment is adhered to at all times.

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team consists of the Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC) who is supported by a team of 14 Infection Control Link Practitioners in delivery of the annual aims and objectives.

The IPC Committee meets quarterly and Membership includes the DIPC, Consultant Microbiologist, IPC Clinical Nurse Specialist, Theatres and Inpatients Matrons, Medical Director, Governance Lead, Theatres Team Leaders, Director of Infrastructure, Antimicrobial Pharmacist, Decontamination Lead and SSD Team Lead.  Membership of the IPC Committee has been extended to include Orthopaedic Consultant and SCP and representatives from Estates and Outpatients.

The Trust Hospital Executive receive quarterly update reports from the IPC Team, with the DIPC attending meetings to respond to any queries raised from the reports.  DIPC & Infection Control Lead oversees and implements local infection control policies, is responsible for the IPC team, and accountable to the HE.

Monthly Hand Hygiene Audits completed in all clinical areas, and assessments and training completed in non-clinical areas using U.V. light box and torch. This ensures that our high standards are maintained across the organisation.

Benenden Hospital's policies comply with all relevant existing national guidance on the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infection.
