Healthcare organisations who sign up have to set out what they will do to deliver safer care. They have to sign up to five pledges and publish these on their websites for staff, patients and the public to see.

Claire Harley, Director of Patient Services, said: “Benenden Hospital has signed up to the national Sign up to Safety as part of its on-going pledge to provide safe, high quality services. Sign up to Safety is a uniting initiative, helping healthcare providers to make improvements and create a supportive, open and transparent environment for patients and staff.”

The five pledges which healthcare providers commit to are: to put safety first, to be more resilient to risks, to be honest, to collaborate and to be supportive.
As part of the being honest pledge, which includes the Hospital being open and transparent, the Hospital has re-launched its raising concerns policy. This involves reminding staff that they can report concerns without fear of reprisals. This is in line with another national campaign called Speak Up Safely, which is run by the Nursing Times. It urges staff to raise concerns about patient safety, quality of care or poor practice.

Benenden Hospital Matron Dee Farris said: “Patient care is our number one priority and our staff are best placed to identify if care should fall below the exemplary standards that we set here. If anyone saw anything which raised alarm we would want our staff to report it to the management team at the very first opportunity to do so.

“Any member of staff who raised concerns would be fully supported and would not need to fear speaking out. We would act upon their comments and we would investigate. “
