Tummy tuck
(abdominoplasty)

Ideal for those with loose or sagging skin due to weight loss, ageing, or pregnancy, a tummy tuck can restore core strength and enhance body contour.

FAQs

What is tummy tuck surgery? +

The aim of a tummy tuck operation (commonly known as an abdominoplasty) is to remove extra skin, scars, stretch marks and fat from the tummy to improve the appearance and shape of the abdomen.

In some cases, it can also tighten the tummy muscles by re-joining the muscles of the abdominal wall if they’ve been pulled apart in the middle (known as the ‘divarification of the recti’).

Stretch marks can sometimes be cut away or tightened to make them less obvious.

A tummy tuck may be further enhanced with additional procedures, such as liposuction targeted to specific areas, or mons lift.

How is a tummy tuck done and how long does a tummy tuck take? +

The duration of a tummy tuck procedure typically ranges from two to three hours, depending on the specific technique used.

If additional procedures such as liposuction or muscle repair are performed alongside the tummy tuck, the surgery may take longer.

During your consultations, your Surgeon will explain the process in detail and tailor the approach to your individual needs.

In general, the procedure involves removing excess skin, fat, stretch marks and any unwanted scarring from the abdominal area to enhance its shape and contour.

If necessary, the Surgeon may also realign the abdominal muscles by reuniting the separated muscles of the abdominal wall, often caused by pregnancy or weight fluctuations.

Is tummy tuck surgery safe? +

Like all surgical procedures, there are potential risks. Our experienced Consultants will discuss these risks during your consultation and take measures to minimise them.

Is tummy tuck plastic surgery? +

Yes, a tummy tuck is plastic surgery performed to removes excess skin and fat after weight loss or pregnancy for a flatter, tighter tummy.

What is a reverse tummy tuck? +

A reverse tummy tuck, also known as an upper abdominoplasty, is a procedure designed to remove excess skin from the upper abdomen.

Unlike a traditional tummy tuck, which places the incision along the bikini line, a reverse tummy tuck involves an incision hidden within the natural crease beneath the breasts, offering a discreet scar placement while targeting the upper abdominal area.

How long does it take to recover from tummy tuck surgery? +

You should be able to return to sedentary activity (i.e. an office job or light duties) at two to three weeks, depending upon how you feel.

Heavier duties, or physical exercise should be postponed for at least six weeks after surgery, to allow the abdominal wall to heal properly.

It’s not uncommon to have small areas of delayed wound healing, often where a dissolvable stitch hasn’t dissolved quite as quickly as it should.

These stitches may “spit” out of the wound (much in the same way as a splinter may start to work its way out of your finger after it has been there for a few days). This can be dealt with easily.

Do I need a full or mini tummy tuck? +

This decision depends on your individual goals and body concerns.

During your consultation, our Surgeon will assess your needs and provide tailored recommendations to help you achieve the best possible outcome.

Can you get pregnant after tummy tuck surgery? +

Yes, it is possible to become pregnant after a tummy tuck as the procedure does not impact fertility.

However, if you're considering pregnancy following the surgery, it's recommended to wait at least six to twelve months to allow your body ample time to heal.

Keep in mind that pregnancy may stretch the abdominal area and lead to excess skin or muscle separation, issues that often prompt people to seek a tummy tuck in the first place.

For this reason, many Surgeons advise postponing the procedure until you've completed your family to ensure the best and longest lasting results.

When can I start doing squats after a tummy tuck? +

You should avoid undertaking any vigorous or strenuous activity or exercise for up to four to six weeks following surgery.

How we reduce risks
  1. Pre-operative assessment

Prior to your surgery, you’ll have an appointment with a specialist nurse who will conduct a thorough review of your medical, surgical, and social history in order to ascertain how suitable, fit and well you are for surgery. They will conduct important investigative tests to ensure that any risks surrounding surgery are well managed.

  2. Dedicated decontamination services

Our on-site Decontamination Services Department ensures all reusable medical devices are thoroughly and safely decontaminated to meet the highest standards of hygiene.
  3. Infection prevention control

To safeguard everyone in our environment, we follow rigorous infection prevention and control protocols. Patients, visitors, and staff are asked to contact us before coming to the hospital if they are experiencing any symptoms of or have an active infection so that we can advise them on whether they should still attend or visit someone who may be a patient.
