Labiaplasty
(labia minora reduction)
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or resizes the labia minora, the inner lips of the vulva which sit either side of the vagina and urethra. Ideal for those with elongated labia tissue due to genetics, ageing, or pregnancy, a labiaplasty can reduce irritation and discomfort.

FAQs

Why would I have a labiaplasty? +

There are many reasons why your labia may become uneven and noticeable, including childbirth and age, and they can all negatively affect your self-esteem.

If your labia tissue is elongated, the excess tissue can become uncomfortable during your normal daily activities. It may stick to your underwear or your leg during physical activity or become uncomfortable if you’re sitting down for long periods of time, for example when you’re riding a bike.

Larger labia might protrude through a swimming costume or make wearing tight clothing impossible. It might also make you self-conscious during sex.

Does labiaplasty hurt? +

After the surgery, you might experience some pain and swelling which can be managed by taking over-the-counter painkillers.

Are you awake during labiaplasty? +

Your Consultant will discuss with you the type of anaesthetic most appropriate for your procedure.

Can you drive after labiaplasty? +

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure.

You will be able to drive from one to weeks after the surgery, but you will need to check with your insurance.

Can you give birth after labiaplasty? +

Yes, labiaplasty does not interfere with your ability to conceive or give birth.

However, because pregnancy and childbirth can alter the shape of the labia, many Surgeons recommend postponing the procedure until you've completed your family.

It's also important to ensure you're fully healed before becoming pregnant to avoid any complications.

Can you walk after labiaplasty? +

Yes, most people experience reasonable mobility within a day following labiaplasty.

While light walking is typically manageable early on, full recovery generally takes around six weeks.

Do you lose sensation after labiaplasty? +

In most cases, labiaplasty does not result in a loss of sensation.

It's completely normal to experience temporary numbness and swelling during the healing process, but sensation typically returns as recovery progresses.

Does labiaplasty make you tighter? +

No, labiaplasty is a procedure that addresses the size and shape of the labia.

It does not involve the vaginal canal and therefore does not affect vaginal tightness.

Does sex hurt after labiaplasty? +

You’ll need to avoid vaginal intercourse for four to six weeks.

How is a labiaplasty done? +

Your Consultant will discuss with you the type of anaesthetic most appropriate for your procedure.

They’ll then trim the excess tissue from the labia minora to allow them to sit behind the labia majora – the outer lips of the vulva.

They’ll close the wound with tiny stitches which will dissolve to leave no scar and apply a non-stick, absorbable dressing.

The operation will take about one to two hours, so you’ll be able to go home the same day.

After the surgery, you might experience some pain and swelling which can be managed by taking over-the-counter painkillers.

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you overnight.

Keep the area around your vulva clean by wiping well after using the toilet and by having a regular bath or shower.

How we reduce risks
  1. Pre-operative assessment

Prior to your surgery, you’ll have an appointment with a specialist nurse who will conduct a thorough review of your medical, surgical, and social history in order to ascertain how suitable, fit and well you are for surgery. They will conduct important investigative tests to ensure that any risks surrounding surgery are well managed.

  2. Dedicated decontamination services

Our on-site Decontamination Services Department ensures all reusable medical devices are thoroughly and safely decontaminated to meet the highest standards of hygiene.
  3. Infection prevention control

To safeguard everyone in our environment, we follow rigorous infection prevention and control protocols. Patients, visitors, and staff are asked to contact us before coming to the hospital if they are experiencing any symptoms of or have an active infection so that we can advise them on whether they should still attend or visit someone who may be a patient.
