Breast uplift
(mastopexy)
A breast uplift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that reshapes and remodels the breasts by removing extra skin, lifting them and repositioning the nipple. Ideal for those with sagging breasts due to weight loss, ageing, or breastfeeding, a breast uplift can restore a more youthful look and enhance body contour.

FAQs

Can you breastfeed after a breast uplift (mastopexy)? +

Breastfeeding is often still possible following a breast uplift procedure.

However, outcomes can vary depending on the surgical technique used. It's important to discuss any future breastfeeding plans with your Consultant beforehand, so they can guide you through the most suitable options.

How does a breast uplift work? +

Your surgery will depend on the type of uplift you’d like and your breast size and will usually be carried out under a general anaesthetic.

The most common uplift uses a cut around your areola (the area of dark-coloured skin on the breast that surrounds the nipple) and vertically under your breast, this is known as an anchor shaped mastopexy.

They’ll remove the excess skin from under your breast and reshape the breast into a more optimal shape. Your nipples can be repositioned at this stage as well.

Can you have breast uplift surgery without implants? +

Yes, a breast uplift can be performed without the use of implants.

This approach is ideal for individuals whose existing breast tissue provides sufficient volume and structure to correct sagging or reposition downward-facing nipples.

What do I wear after my breast uplift? +

After a breast uplift, you will need to wear a compression bra for six to eight weeks.

How long after mastopexy can I sleep on my side? +

In the initial stages of recovery, it's recommended to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated to help reduce swelling and promote optimal healing.

Most patients can safely begin sleeping on their side approximately six weeks after surgery, once the healing process is well underway.

What are the risks associated with having a mastopexy? +

As with all types of surgery, mastopexy has risks associated with the procedure including scarring, bleeding, increased or decreased sensation, problems with stitches and asymmetry of your breasts.

Your Consultant will talk you through these and any risks associated with anaesthesia.

How should I prepare for mastopexy? +

There’s not much you need to do to prepare for your mastopexy surgery, but, as with most operations, you should ensure that you’re as healthy as possible before your procedure. This could include keeping your weight stable and eating healthily.

You should stop smoking or vaping at least six weeks before your surgery, which will help the wound heal.

Your Consultant will advise whether you should stop any medication ahead of the procedure.

On the day of your surgery, you should shower as normal to ensure the area is as clean as possible.

What should I expect after mastopexy? +

During and after the surgery, we’ll give you antibiotics to prevent infection.

Depending on your recovery, you may go home the same day, or you may need to stay overnight in hospital.

Someone will need to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you overnight.

How long is mastopexy recovery? +

Your Consultant will talk to you about your recovery and aftercare, including how to manage any soreness and pain, what bra to wear and how soon you can go back to your normal activities.

You may need to take two weeks off work and avoid driving until you feel comfortable wearing a seatbelt.

It can take several months for the swelling to subside and for the final results to be visible.

If you notice any swelling, redness or pain you should call us immediately.

How we reduce risks
  1. Pre-operative assessment

Prior to your surgery, you’ll have an appointment with a specialist nurse who will conduct a thorough review of your medical, surgical, and social history in order to ascertain how suitable, fit and well you are for surgery. They will conduct important investigative tests to ensure that any risks surrounding surgery are well managed.

  2. Dedicated decontamination services

Our on-site Decontamination Services Department ensures all reusable medical devices are thoroughly and safely decontaminated to meet the highest standards of hygiene.
  3. Infection prevention control

To safeguard everyone in our environment, we follow rigorous infection prevention and control protocols. Patients, visitors, and staff are asked to contact us before coming to the hospital if they are experiencing any symptoms of or have an active infection so that we can advise them on whether they should still attend or visit someone who may be a patient.
