Breast enhancement
(boob job)
A breast enhancement, or boob job, is a procedure that reshapes and fills the breasts using either implants or fat transfer. Ideal if you want larger breasts, have different size breasts or have lost fullness either from age, weight change, breast cancer treatment or pregnancy, a breast enhancement can boost your self-esteem and confidence.

My breasts have given me a newfound confidence and I can wear certain dresses and tops with no bra, as they sit so well! I would recommend Benenden Hospital to anybody, especially for cosmetic surgery, and I always have done when friends and family have mentioned it.

FAQs

Why would I have breast enhancement surgery? +

Breast enhancement surgery is suitable for you if you have small breasts, different size breasts or have lost fullness either from age, weight change, breast cancer treatment, pregnancy or if you simply want larger breasts.

Breast enhancement can fill out the breasts or correct an asymmetry which can help you feel more confident and feminine again.

If your breasts have drooped and need a lift, then you can have a breast augmentation mastopexy (implants and a lift).

What type of breast enhancement could I have? +

Implants are great if you want a fuller look and know exactly how much larger you’d like to go.

Fat transfer/lipofilling is useful if you want to avoid implants and only want a small enhancement.

What type of implants could I have? +

For cosmetic surgery in the UK, silicone implants, rather than saline, are most commonly used for the best outcome.

There are two different shapes of implant, round and anatomical (also known as teardrop). There are smooth and textured implants, although nowadays we also have ‘smooth implants’ with the benefits of textured implants which are known as micro and nano textured implants.

There are pros and cons with both. Smooth implants tend to move around more and are more likely to develop capsular contracture. Textured implants minimise these risks but have a very small risk of developing Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) which is a form of cancer.

How long do breast implants last? +

A boob job is not considered a once in a lifetime procedure.

While implants are long-lasting, they typically need to be replaced or revised after 10 to 15 years due to natural changes in the body or implant wear over time.

Regular check-ups can help monitor their condition and ensure optimal results.

Can you breastfeed with breast implants? +

Breastfeeding is often possible after breast enhancement surgery, though it can depend on factors such as the placement of the implants and the surgical technique used.

It's important to discuss your plans for breastfeeding with your surgeon beforehand, so they can tailor the procedure to support your goals and minimise any potential impact.

How long after having breast implants can you fly? +

Flying is generally discouraged for approximately six weeks following breast enhancement surgery.

It's important to wait until you've had a follow-up consultation, where your Consultant can assess your recovery and confirm that it's safe to fly.

This precaution helps minimise the risk of complications and ensures optimal healing.

How do I prepare for breast enhancement surgery? +

It's essential to be as healthy as possible before your procedure, and your Consultant will want to know your BMI and smoking status.

If you're a smoker, you will be asked to stop for at least six weeks before surgery.

You will have a pre-operative assessment with a specialist nurse who will go through everything with you before the surgery.

On the day of your surgery, you should shower as usual to ensure the area is clean.

What happens during breast enhancement surgery? +

The surgery usually takes about an hour and a half and is carried out under general anaesthesia.

Your Consultant will make an incision under your breast in the inframammary fold to allow them to insert the implant.

This will be closed with dissolving stitches, surgical glue and a small dressing or tape applied over.

What should I expect after breast enhancement surgery? +

After the surgery, you can take some basic painkillers. You'll need to wear a post-operative surgical bra for at least six weeks.

Depending on your recovery, you may go home the same day or need to stay overnight at the hospital.

You'll have a wound check appointment one to two weeks post-op and further follow ups with your Consultant.

How long does it take to recover from breast enhancement surgery? +

Your Consultant will discuss your recovery and aftercare with you, including how to manage any soreness or pain, what bra to wear, and when you can resume your regular activities.

Typically, you can return to work after one to two weeks but should minimise your activity and including any exercise for six weeks.

It can take several months for the swelling to subside and for the final results to be visible.

What are the risks involved with breast enhancement surgery? +

As with most procedures, there are risks associated with breast enhancement surgery. These risks include bleeding, infection (in rare cases), numbness around the scar, nipple sensitivity, delayed wound healing, and asymmetry.

Long-term risks include the hardening of the scar tissue around the implant, also known as capsular contracture or implant failure (rupture), which may require further rectification surgery.

Smooth implants tend to move around more and are more likely to develop capsular contracture. Textured implants minimise these risks but have a very small risk of developing Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) which is a form of cancer.

Our high-tech and methodical approach to infection control means we offer a safe, clean environment, with no cases of Bacteraemia or Septicaemia related to MRSA since our records began.

How we reduce risks
  1. Pre-operative assessment

Prior to your surgery, you’ll have an appointment with a specialist nurse who will conduct a thorough review of your medical, surgical, and social history in order to ascertain how suitable, fit and well you are for surgery. They will conduct important investigative tests to ensure that any risks surrounding surgery are well managed.

  2. Dedicated decontamination services

Our on-site Decontamination Services Department ensures all reusable medical devices are thoroughly and safely decontaminated to meet the highest standards of hygiene.
  3. Infection prevention control

To safeguard everyone in our environment, we follow rigorous infection prevention and control protocols. Patients, visitors, and staff are asked to contact us before coming to the hospital if they are experiencing any symptoms of or have an active infection so that we can advise them on whether they should still attend or visit someone who may be a patient.
