Blepharoplasty
(eyelid surgery)
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids for a more youthful appearance. Ideal for those with excess skin due to ageing or genetics, eyelid surgery can also improve your vision if your field of vision is being obstructed.

Very straight forward from start to finish. I was well informed regarding the procedure and all went smoothly on the day. I was feeling nervous but every effort was made to put me at ease which was appreciated. Early days but I am very happy with the results.

FAQs

How long does blepharoplasty last? +

For most patients, blepharoplasty delivers long-lasting results, with no need for further surgeries in the future and you will continue to age normally.

When can I sleep on my side after blepharoplasty? +

You will need to avoid sleeping on your side until you've fully healed. During the recovery period, sleeping on your back with your head elevated helps minimise swelling.

How long does it take blepharoplasty to heal? +

Following surgery, you may experience some discomfort, which can be managed with basic pain relief. Cooling pads can be applied to help soothe and help with swelling during initial healing.

Upper eyelid surgery: Recovery typically takes about one to two weeks and bruising can take a little longer.

Lower eyelid surgery: Recovery is slightly longer, around two weeks and bruising can be worse for lower eyelids than upper.

Please be aware that you will have stitches in for the first week. Our nursing team will provide tailored aftercare guidance to support your healing. You may also be sent home with eye drops for the first week.

Are you awake for blepharoplasty? +

For upper eyelid surgery, a local anaesthetic is used, so you’ll be awake but won’t feel any pain.

However, if you are extremely nervous, you can request a general anaesthetic where you would be put to sleep.

Lower eyelid surgery, however, is performed under general anaesthetic.

Can blepharoplasty affect vision? +

Blepharoplasty can enhance vision by removing excess skin that may obstruct your line of sight.

However, it's common to experience temporary blurry vision during the healing process, which typically resolves as the eyes recover.

Can blepharoplasty be done twice? +

Yes, it is possible to undergo blepharoplasty more than once if needed.

However, any decision to repeat the procedure should be guided by your Surgeon, who can assess your individual needs.

Can blepharoplasty change the shape of eyes? +

Blepharoplasty can create the appearance of larger, more open eyes by removing excess skin and tissue.

However, it does not alter the underlying structure or natural shape of the eyes themselves.

Will there be visible scars after blepharoplasty? +

As with any surgery, scarring is expected, but these will fade and soften over time.

Upper eyelid surgery scars are discreetly positioned within the natural crease of the eyelid and extending slightly into the crow’s feet area.

For lower eyelid surgery, there are a few different techniques which means the scar can be in one of a few different places, but the most common is where the scar sits just beneath the lower eyelid and eyelashes (waterline), making it barely noticeable.

How is blepharoplasty performed? +

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common plastic and cosmetic procedures in the UK.

Upper eyelid surgery involves removing excess skin, tissue and a small amount of muscle to create a refreshed, youthful appearance.

Lower eyelid surgery goes a step further by removing or repositioning fat along with excess skin, tissue and muscle to reduce under-eye puffiness, hollowing or crepey skin.

When can I wear make up again after blepharoplasty? +

To allow proper healing, we recommend waiting until the wounds have healed before applying makeup. It’s important to keep your eye area clean and avoid rubbing.

How we reduce risks
  1. Pre-operative assessment

Prior to your surgery, you’ll have an appointment with a specialist nurse who will conduct a thorough review of your medical, surgical, and social history in order to ascertain how suitable, fit and well you are for surgery. They will conduct important investigative tests to ensure that any risks surrounding surgery are well managed.

  2. Dedicated decontamination services

Our on-site Decontamination Services Department ensures all reusable medical devices are thoroughly and safely decontaminated to meet the highest standards of hygiene.
  3. Infection prevention control

To safeguard everyone in our environment, we follow rigorous infection prevention and control protocols. Patients, visitors, and staff are asked to contact us before coming to the hospital if they are experiencing any symptoms of or have an active infection so that we can advise them on whether they should still attend or visit someone who may be a patient.
