About Dr Cherng Jong
I’m a Consultant Dermatologist with a special interest in diagnosing and treating skin cancers. I’m trained in dermoscopy (using a dermatoscope) to assess skin lesions and perform mole checks with precision and care.
I regularly carry out treatments such as:
- Cryotherapy (freezing skin lesions)
- Curettage and cautery
- Excision and biopsy
- Flap repair
- Daylight photodynamic therapy
- Intralesional steroid injections for scars
- Botulinum toxin injections for excessive sweating (underarms)
- Routine patch testing for allergies
While I don’t treat certain lesions in more complex areas (like eyelids, nostrils, ears, fingers/toes, or large lipomas over 5cm), I’m happy to assess and refer you to the right specialist if needed.
I graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1997 and completed my postgraduate medical training in the UK, passing the Royal College of Physicians exam in 2003.
My dermatology journey began in Dundee as a Clinical Research Fellow, where I was involved in pioneering research on photodynamic therapy (PDT), now a well-established treatment for several skin conditions.
I trained as a registrar in South Wales, working with leading dermatologists and conducting a nationwide study on the impact of photosensitivity disorders, supported by the British Skin Foundation.
Since completing my specialist training in 2008, I’ve worked across the UK and Australia, gaining extensive experience in skin cancer management. I’ve held roles such as Clinical and Skin Cancer Lead for West Kent Dermatology, where I contributed to weekly multidisciplinary meetings for high-risk skin cancer cases.
I stay up to date by attending national and international conferences and am a proud member of the British Association of Dermatologists, the American Academy of Dermatology, and the International Dermoscopy Society.
I’ve published research on the impact of photosensitive skin conditions and contact allergies in UK patients. I also authored the “Infections and Infestations” chapter in a dermatology training textbook for registrars.
When I’m not in clinic, I love spending time with my family and gardening, it’s a great way to stay relaxed.
