Benenden Hospital remembers its roots with launch of new Respiratory Medicine service

Two respiratory consultants

Benenden Hospital is pleased to announce the launch of its new Respiratory Medicine service.

The launch is significant, as it marks the return of a discipline that has been part of the hospital’s heritage since 1907, when it was originally established as a centre for tuberculosis treatment.

The new private service, led by experts in Respiratory Medicine Dr Syed Hassan and Dr Sandip Banerjee, offers treatment for patients struggling with lung conditions and breathing problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergies, breathlessness and sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea. Diagnosis and initial care can also be provided for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and pulmonary hypertension.

Hospital Director Claire Harley said:

“We’re delighted to launch our new Respiratory Medicine service, allowing us to reflect on our proud origins as a hospital to treat postal workers suffering from tuberculosis.

“We are constantly looking to evolve the services that we provide, and this new discipline extends our established expertise in delivering very high standards of care across a wide range of specialties.”

The service offers a range of diagnostic tests, including lung function tests, spirometry tests, sleep studies and exhaled nitric oxide testing (also known as FeNO).
