Hospital sponsors school science competition

Benenden Hospital has been helping to encourage the next generation of scientists, inventors and innovators.

The Hospital was one of the sponsors of the Kent Messenger Bright Sparks Awards, along with Pfizer, Golding Homes, the University of Kent, Discovery Park and Hectic Lifestyles.

Students from across Kent were invited to submit collaborative science projects using cross curricular skills in maths, IT, science and engineering to investigate, innovate and invent. The top 10 initiatives were selected to compete at a Dragon’s Den style final which was held at Discovery Park, Sandwich in a bid to win trophies and a £500 prize.

Finalists were quizzed by a panel who included Hospital Director Jane Abbott. Benenden Hospital presented an experience prize to Dane Court Grammar School, in Broadstairs. This will involve pupils spending half a day at the Hospital learning first aid, visiting the Hospital’s new £1.85 million Sterile Services Department and practicing doing sutures on dummies.

The overall winners were Tonbridge Grammar School.

Jane Abbott said: “The visionary images created by teenagers, their enthusiasm, their passion, the imagination and innovation was overwhelming.”
