If surgery is needed the operation would usually be performed under a general anaesthetic, which means the patient would be asleep. In some cases a spinal anaesthetic would be used, where the patient would be numb from the waist down.
Shock wave therapy might be recommended for some cases before considering surgery. A patient would discuss the various options with a Consultant.
