Urinalysis is a frequently performed diagnostic or screening tool. It can help detect substances or cellular material in the urine associated with different metabolic and kidney disorders.

Urine tests have numerous uses, and are often one of the first steps taken to investigate, diagnose, or monitor a number of conditions.

You will be provided with a urine sample pot. You may be asked to provide a midstream specimen of urine, as it is possible that the initial stream may contain bacteria which could cause an inaccurate result.  On some occasions you may be asked to collect all the urine you excrete over a 24 hour period.

No preparation is usually required for a urine sample test.  If you are having a 24 hour urine test you will be provided with instructions on how to collect the sample.
