At the age of 63 Mrs Moon decided that she wanted both knees replaced to improve her quality of life. She was waking up at night due to pain, she struggled to climb stairs and she was unable to walk her dog. She took the decision after other medical procedures failed to give her any long term improvement.

She had her first knee replaced in June 2012 and her other knee was replaced in March 2013.Knee Replacement Surgery benenden hospital

Now she says she can walk as often and as far as she likes, the pain has completely disappeared, she can manage stairs whereas she couldn't before and she feels like a new person.

Both knee replacements were carried out Benenden Hospital's consultant orthopaedic surgeon Matthew Oliver. He carried out the first operation at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. When Mrs Moon came to have her second knee done she tracked him down to Benenden and asked her GP to refer her, as an NHS patient.

Mr Oliver did a great job with both knees - and I've recommended him to friends who are thinking of having knee replacements too

Mrs Moon said: "Mr Oliver did a great job with both knees - and I've recommended him to friends who are thinking of having knee replacements too.

"It was lovely at Benenden Hospital. Everyone was so nice and very supportive. Thanks to my operations I have a much better quality of life now. Before I wasn't sleeping well, the pain was waking me up and I had started to walk bow legged.

"Now I'm at the gym three times a week, on the treadmill, the cross trainer and other equipment and I'm a different person."

With both knee replacements (link to http://www.benendenhospital.org.uk/TreatmentAndServices/Knee-Replacement/reasons-for-knee-replacement.aspx) Mrs Moon had a Signature knee (link to http://www.benendenhospital.org.uk/TreatmentAndServices/Knee-Replacement/Knee-Replacement-Surgery/The-benefits-of-a-total-knee-replacement.aspx), which is custom made knee manufactured to an individual's exact measurements.

Mrs Moon, from Kent, added: "I'm very proud of my new knees. No-one would know I've got replacements. The scarring is just a little line, they have healed so well."

Mrs Moon was so pleased with her new knees she sent her consultant a photo of them, having first drawn smiley faces on both!
