MRI scanner arrival

MRI scanner arrival

Benenden Hospital has taken delivery of a new MRI scanner – which is part of a £2.5 million investment in diagnostic imaging and part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the Hospital site.

It is a Toshiba Vantage Titan which will deliver benefits for both patients and staff.

The MRI scanner has a wide bore so that it can easily accommodate large and obese patients. For all patients there will be more comfort, less noise and less claustrophobia. For staff there will be a quieter working environment and patient access will be much easier. The new equipment will enable state of the art imaging techniques.

The scanner and the huge magnet needed to make it work came from Japan, via Holland. Once installed the magnet needed to be level to 1 mm. Delivery and installation of the equipment required a team of experts and hydraulic lifting equipment as the magnet alone weighed 4.5 tonnes.

The new equipment will replace a mobile MRI facility on site. The new equipment is part of multi million pound redevelopment of the Hospital, which is nearing completion.

Dr John Giles, Consultant Radiologist, said: “The radiology department are looking forward to being able to offer the new capabilities of this exciting new imaging service to both Benenden members and the local community.”
