What is the ACU?

Our ACU offers same day treatment for patients who require minor procedures without general anaesthetic. This means that after your procedure, you can go home the same day, without being admitted into hospital overnight.

What treatments are carried out in the ACU?

The following treatments are carried out in our ACU:

How do I get referred to the ACU?

You’ll have been referred to the ACU by your GP, Consultant or another health care professional.

What happens when I arrive at the ACU?

A member of our nursing team will greet you and introduce themselves and the facilities. They should also be able to give you an idea of how long you’ll be on the unit.

What happens during my time in the ACU?

A nurse will carry out an assessment as part of your admission to the unit. This will include asking for a list of your current medication and taking basic observations such as a blood pressure.

During your procedure, you'll be looked after by our highly experienced nursing staff who will explain to you what is happening and what to expect.

You will be monitored for a short while in the recovery area. Refreshments will be available (please make staff aware of any dietary restrictions).

The recovery nurses will provide you with your discharge information and procedure report prior to going home.

What happens after I leave the ACU?

Once your appointment is over, you’ll be able to go home. Your nurse or Consultant will let you know what the next steps are after your procedure.

If you have any concerns after your appointment, please call the hospital or your GP on the numbers that we’ll give you when you’re discharged.
