Benenden Hospital celebrates 110 years
Benenden Hospital celebrated its 110th birthday with a big party.
The party included balloons, games, candyfloss, a fun photo booth, a pop up museum, a quiz night and a fish and chip supper, as well as The Great Benenden Birthday Bake Off. Members of staff baked some amazing cakes with the competition judged live on BBC Radio Kent by Breakfast Show presenters John Warnett and Maggie Doyle.
The winner was Clinical Pharmacist Lesley Grice who won shopping vouchers worth £110. Her creation was a pill bottle suspended above a cake, with Smartie pills tipping onto the sponge. Runner up, winning £45 worth of vouchers, was Clinical Skills Facilitator Lesley Higham with a cake featuring a patient in a bed, with a nurse, a bedside cabinet, the Hospital’s current logo and it’s old logo, the Cross of Lorraine.
Benenden Hospital was originally a sanatorium for patients suffering with TB. In its first five years, from 1907-1911, the sanatorium treated 988 patients.
The Hospital has diversified and expanded over the years and it is currently undergoing a multi-million pound redevelopment, due for completion later this year.
In the last five years, 2012-2106 there were 250,000 patient attendances.
Today the Hospital offers a range of treatments and services ranging from weight loss surgery, cataract surgery and hip and knee replacements to treatment for varicose veins, incontinence and much more.
Benenden Hospital was opened in 1907 to treat postal workers suffering from tuberculosis. When cases of TB began to decline the Benenden Healthcare Society expanded treatment to include chest complaints and cancer and shortly afterwards an operating theatre, surgical wards and an x-ray department were introduced.
Today the Benenden Healthcare Society is known as Benenden. Benenden offers a range of discretionary healthcare and well-being services to individual and business healthcare members.
Benenden Hospital is a subsidiary and is an independent hospital with charitable status.
The Hospital caters for members of Benenden, private patients and NHS patients through the e-Referral Service.
