What is urology?

Urology is the surgical specialty that focuses on the urinary tract of males and females and on the reproductive system of males.

Urological problems can often affect one another as the organs involved are connected in a complex system. Your urologist will manage non-surgical problems as well as ones which may involve surgery, to maintain your overall condition as best as possible.

The organs covered by urology include:

  • The kidneys are bean-shaped organs about the size of a fist. They are located at the bottom of the rib cage at the back of the body. Healthy kidneys filter the blood to remove waste products from the food we eat and remove excess fluid to balance fluid levels in the body. In addition to filtering the blood, the kidneys other functions help with the control of blood pressure, the production of hormones and chemicals that produce red blood cells and maintain healthy bones.
  • Adrenal glands are triangle-shaped glands located on top of the kidneys. They are the part of the body responsible for releasing three different types of hormones (cortisol, aldosterone, and testosterone). When the glands produce too much or less hormones than your body needs, you can become sick.
  • The ureters are the thick, long 'tubes' that aid the urine in moving from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • The bladder is a stretchy, muscular bag that collects and stores urine. It is located in the pelvis at the lowest point in the abdomen, immediately behind the pubic bone. A problem in any part of the bladder function can result in urinary incontinence.
  • The urethra carries urine from the bladder out of the body, and in males it also carries semen from the testes through the penis (for sexual ejaculation).
  • The male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis).
