This procedure is also known as vault repair. Your uterus (womb) is normally held in place by various muscles, tissue and ligaments.
Prolapse of the uterus occurs when the muscles supporting the uterus become so weak that the uterus cannot stay in place, and so it slips down from its normal position.
Through a cut in the back wall of the vagina, the tissues between the rectum and vagina are strengthened by placing a strong stitch around one of the ligaments that connects to the backbone, preventing the bowel from pushing forward. The stitch around the ligament helps to hold up the vagina. The stitch will dissolve over some months, but in that time, it will be replaced by your own scar tissue.
The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic. You will be in hospital for two nights.
Any vaginal bleeding may persist for up to two weeks, sutures will dissolve in about twelve weeks.
You must eat a healthy diet to avoid constipation, and NOT lift anything heavier than a half filled kettle of water for at least six weeks.
We recommend that you dont drive for four weeks and return to work after four to six weeks( depending on your job).
These precautions are necessary for allowing the repaired tissues to heal optimally and hence give the best result from the surgery.
