Abdominal Myomectomy

Myomectomy is the removal of uterine fibroids - fibrous and muscular tissues which form in the uterus, or can be outside the uterus or cervix on pedicles. The uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and vagina all remain intact.

The operation is carried out through a cut in your abdomen, usually a bikini cut, but if the fibroids are large a midline (up and down) incision may be needed.

On the Day of Surgery

On admission to the ward a nurse will check your details are correct. The surgeon will talk to you and you will be invited to ask any questions you may still have. Your stay in hospital will usually be for up to 48 hours.

Following your Operation

  • It will be necessary to take regular pain relief to keep you comfortable for the first couple of weeks at least.
  • It is important that you rest and avoid any heavy lifting whilst you recover.  Having a gentle walk each day will help.
  • Eating a healthy diet will avoid constipation. You are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids: 1½- 2 litres per day. Avoid alcohol.
  • You will be able to drive again after four to six weeks.
  • Two to three months is the optimal time for recovery from abdominal surgery.  If you follow the advice of the hospital staff, you should make a full recovery and resume a completely normal, active and unrestrictive lifestyle.
