Infertility Services
|
|
The infertility service offers investigation and some treatment of female infertility.
The process starts with an initial consultation for the patient. The woman’s partner is encouraged to attend the appointment with her. The husband / partner should undergo semen analysis (this is usually available via his GP) and the couple should bring the results to the initial consultation. No investigation of the woman’s fertility is undertaken until the semen analysis results are known to the Benenden Hospital doctor.
If the semen quality is so poor that the couple are very unlikely to be able to conceive naturally, they are referred back to the NHS for IVF, ICSI or IUI. None of these are available at Benenden Hospital.
If the semen quality is sufficiently good, investigation of the woman’s fertility commences.
The investigations include:
-
Hormone profile
-
Thyroid function test
-
Transvaginal ultrasound scan
-
Laparoscopy & dye
Some or all of these will be used depending on the woman’s medical history. If a reason for the woman’s infertility is diagnosed, the following treatments are available:
Ovulation problems:
-
Drugs and regular monitoring via transvaginal ultrasound scan for up to 6 months
Polycystic ovary syndrome:
-
Drugs for 6 – 12 months
-
Laparoscopic ovarian drilling
Endometriosis:
-
Surgical removal of endometriosis from the abdominal cavity
-
Injection every 4 weeks for 6 months to include artificial menopause. This is often available on the NHS via the GP
Uterine fibroids/polyp/septum:
-
Hysteroscopic or laparoscopic surgery
Fallopian tube blockages or damage:
-
Laparoscopic tube surgery
