What to Bring into Hospital with You

Your completed hospital admission form

All medicines discussed at pre-assessment that are required whilst  you are an inpatient, you should bring in with you.  Please bring all medicines in their original packaging.

Nightclothes, a dressing gown, slippers, comfortable clothing and shoes for wearing indoors and outdoors, toiletries and perhaps something to read.  Towels are provided for your use.

A small amount of money to buy items from the hospital shop or for the telephone.  Mobile phones can be used in designated areas such as the communal lounge and the cafeteria.  They are not allowed to be used in the main ward. You should not bring large amounts of money or jewellery into hospital.  Please note that the hospital cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage howsoever caused to jewellery or personal effects.

With the exception of electric razors you are requested not to bring any electrical appliances in with you for reasons of safety, however, i-pods and MP3 players can be brought in but electrical charging will not be permitted.

When you arrive

When you first arrive, report to Reception located just inside the Hospital entrance. You will be directed to the Admissions Lounge.  Please bring with you any specimens, for example, an early morning urine for pregnancy testing if required.

When you arrive in the Admissions Lounge nursing staff will check your pre-assessment details. Your Anaesthetist will see you and discuss your anaesthetic and ensure that the required blood and other tests have been carried out.  At this visit there will be an opportunity for you to discuss the anaesthetic procedure appropriate to the planned surgery.  The nursing staff on Admissions will be able to answer any other questions you may have whilst you are being prepared for Theatre.  If you have a family member/friend with you, they will be shown your bed area after you have gone to Theatre and your belongings can be taken to the ward.  Alternatively, the nursing staff can take your belongings over.

After your operation

You will be transferred from the Theatre Recovery Area to the ward.

The Ward Sister is responsible for the ward, a 'Named Nurse' will be allocated responsibility for your nursing care each shift.  Your nurse will be the person who can help reassure you about any problems or worries that you may have.

If you want to discuss any aspects relating to your treatment, your nurse can make arrangements for one of your doctors to see you and, if you so wish, your relatives.

Occasionally wards are closed for maintenance or to maximise staff cover and it may be necessary to move you to another ward.  Such occasions are rare and will not affect your treatment.

Church of England and Roman Catholic Chaplains visit the hospital on a regular basis.  Should patients wish particularly to meet one of them they may be contacted via the Ward staff.

The Nursing Staff will be able to answer any other questions you may have regarding your care and prepare you for theatre

After your operation the nursing staff will be there to guide you through your recovery.

Visiting Times

Visiting times are between 11.00am and 8.00pm.  There is a rest period for patients between 1.30pm and 3.00pm.  Visiting can still take place in the communal lounge during these times.  There is some flexibility if you are unable to visit during these times, please speak to the Senior Nurse on duty.
