Benenden Centenary Rose - Rosa Garland's Gold
This is a floribunda type with cupped, semi-double very fragrant flowers. These are a vibrant orange when in bud, opening to a strong apricot with a golden yellow centre and darker stamens, and a salmon reverse to the petals. The flowers age well fading to a softer apricot whilst staying on the plant without dropping. It has glossy mid-green leaves and is repeat flowering from early summer.
The rose which was named after Charles Garland, the Society's founder, has been bred for the Amateur Rose Breeders Association by H M. & C L Horner in Essex. This rose was grown from seed and is a completely new and unique cultivar.
We chose this particular rose, because when we viewed it in the July 06 heat-wave with the drought in full swing and growing on clay soil, it stood out from all the others in the field. It was a strong healthy looking bush with glossy leaves and a mass of fragrant flowers and appeared to be thriving in the very difficult conditions.
