The leading scientist and fertility expert, Lord Winston, will officially open the Benenden Fertility Centre at Benenden Hospital near Cranbrook, on Wednesday, 1 June at 2 p.m.
Lord Winston, well known for his work in the fertility field and for several successful TV programmes on different aspects of science, will perform the opening just weeks after the Centre’s first two babies were born. He is also Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College, where he runs a research programme in the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology,

The Centre is located within the grounds of the Hospital and represents a significant investment by the Hospital Trust, which is part of the Benenden Healthcare Society - a not-for-profit healthcare provider. The Fertility Centre is open to members of the Society and to private, self-funded patients.

Jane Abbott, Hospital Director said:

“It’s a great honour for the Benenden Fertility Centre to have Lord Winston join us to officially open the Centre. His past work and research in relation to reproductive medicine, particularly in the field of IVF, has had a direct bearing on the treatment and services we are able to offer patients today.”

His research led to the development of gynaecological microsurgery in the 1970s and various improvements in reproductive medicine, subsequently adopted internationally, particularly in the field of endocrinology and IVF.

Benenden Fertility Centre began offering IVF related treatments to couples in the spring of last year and in February and March of 2011 the Centre’s first two babies were born following treatment for the parents.

Director of the Benenden Fertility Centre is the Hospital’s Consultant Gynaecologist, Mr Mohamed Hefni, who said:

“At some point around one in six couples experience difficulties in conceiving and while the treatment does not always lead to pregnancy, our aim at the Centre is to give the patient individual care and a quality experience. However, we have an exceptional team in place at the new Fertility Centre, where they work in state-of-the-art facilities and this will assist us in doing all that we can to hopefully help couples achieve a healthy pregnancy.”
