About Us

We can offer you a Return to Practice placement for adult nursing in general surgery, day surgery, medical assessment unit, outpatient clinic and theatres and for child nursing in our Paediatric ward. 

About the Course

The course is validated by Canterbury Christ Church University and consists of twelve theory days which take place on site at Benenden Hospital. You will also be expected to undertake a minimum of 75 practice hours under supervision of a mentor in a placement validated by the University. For health visitors it will be 150 hours (20 days).

Who is Eligible?

  • Applicants must be registered with the NMC and must have had less than 450 hours of professional practice in the past three years
  • Applicants for whom English is not their first language will be expected to have evidence of English at Level 6 or higher of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • Applicants will be expected to achieve passes for numeracy and literacy tests undertaken at interview
  • Applicants must have undertaken 2 years of clinical practice since qualification.
  • Entry to the programme is conditional on a Criminal Records Bureau check and Occupational Health clearance
  • If you have not been in clinical practice for over 10 years it is advisable to work as a nursing care assistant prior to the course

Programme Outline

Credit rating:

  • 20 credits towards Diploma (Level 5) or Degree (Level 6) for adult and child nursing.
  • 20 credits towards Degree (Level 6) for Health Visiting
Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to:

  1. Enable students to be competent and confident to function and accept accountability and responsbility as a registered Adult Nurse, Child Nurse or Health Visitor in their chosen setting
  2. Enable students to achieve and demonstrate the learning outcomes as specified by the NMC (2006) and the practice competences defined by the essential skills clusters (NMC 2007). For adult and child nursing and for Health visitors the standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses (NMC 2004)
  3. Prepare students to be fit for practice with the appropriate knowledge and skills(Department of Health, 2004)

Programme Content

The content of the programme is derived from the competencies required by the NMC as set out in the PREP handbook (NMC 2006) ) and Health Visitor Return to Practice Framework (Great Britain: Department of Health, 2011). The programme consists of 12 study days (60 taught hours) at Benenden Hospital's Learning & Development Centre.

An initial block of 3 study days will prepare students with essential knowledge and skills prior to their clinical placement including legal and professional issues,  clinical policies and procedures, drug administration etc. For the Health visiting pathway some of these days will take place at Canterbury Christ Church University. A Library induction day at Canterbury Christ Church University will take place during the course. Students will also be expected to attend their local Trust Induction day and an orientation day at Benenden prior to the start of the course.

The remaining 9 study days will cover library skills, on line searching and essay writing skills as well as practical skills, evidence based practice, current health topics and patient assessment and care planning.

All students will prepare and present a short presentation on a professional topic at the end of the course.

Programme Learning Outcomes  

Level 5

By the end of the programme the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the current issues in nursing including health and social policy, legislative requirements, codes of practice and guidelines relevant to their practice
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the current structure and organisation of care, nationally and locally;
  3. Reflect on the effectiveness of practice using relevant literature and research to inform decision making
  4. Function effectively in a multi-professional team in order to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care inclduing the effective delivery of emergency care
  5. Identify own strengths and weaknesses, acknowledge limitations of competence and recognise the importance of maintaining and developing professional competence.
Level 6

By the end of the programme the student will be able to :

  1. Recognise the importance of the current issues in nursing including health and social policy, legislative requirements, codes of practice and guidelines relevant to their practice
  2. Evaluate the current structure and organisation of care, nationally and locally
  3. Reflect on and critically analyse the effectiveness of practice using relevant literature and research to inform decision making
  4. Actively participates in a multi-professional team in order to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care including the effective delivery of emergency care
  5. Assess own strengths and weaknesses, acknowledge limitations of competence and demonstrate the importance of maintaining and developing professional competence

Assessment of Practice

All students will undertake a period of supervised clinical practice which is calculated from the length of time they have been out of practice.
Students will be assessed in practice by their designated mentor/practice teacher who will facilitate the achievement of the learning outcomes outlined in the Assessment of Practice Document. (500 word equivalent)

Students will also be required t write a reflective diary (total 1500 words) for evidence achievement of the learning outcomes in practice.

Assessment of Theory

Students will submit a 2500 word essay.
