The RM Society was founded in 1950 by ex-patients from Benenden Hospital. In the days when most of our patients suffered from tuberculosis, the sign of their recovery was mercury rising in a thermometer - hence the name RM (Rising Mercury).
The RM Society is run by volunteers with the aim of generating additional income.
Membership is open to anyone who wishes to fundraise for the Hospital and currently stands at around 2,000. Newsletters are issued each year giving news of the latest developments at Benenden Hospital as well as progress at our registered office in York, The Benenden Healthcare Society Ltd.
Many members attend a popular annual reunion lunch each October and an AGM each April. Several supporters also give donations in appreciation for the benefit of the Hospital - in recent years the RM Society has bought equipment to an average value of £20,000 per year, all aimed at enhancing the patient experience rather than providing routine equipment.
